Sallie Malt

Sallie works part time on the 'coaching in clubs' programme. This programme has two strands: 'Learn to Row' and 'Excel'.
'Learn to row'
Sallie works with sliding seat clubs in the west region, supporting them to deliver a block of introductory 'learn to row' sessions. Clubs send expressions of interest to Rhiannon or Sallie if they wish to be involved. Each club needs to be accredited to Explore Rowing (BRs flagship adult participation programme) and each new participant signs up as a silver member. Sallie could take on a direct coaching role, or act as a coach mentor for less experienced coaches.
'Excel'
Sallie has been working hard to develop a squad of up to 24 16-24 year olds to work with. The aim is to develop those who sit below GB level, who may be wanting to progress their rowing further. Sallie will send invites to athletes who have performed particularly well at WEARA events to attend a training camp and a series of assessments. Once the squad is named, Sallie will run training camps approx one every 2 months, and also visit clubs to check on athletes progress. Last year, the Excel scheme sent a composite crew to the mens and womens head races.

Paul Johnson

Paul is a community coach, working on the SW Rowability project, which is running until April 2013. Paul works with rowers with mental and physical disabilities, breaking down the barriers to participate in rowing.
Half of Pauls time is spent in schools, working with the Plymouth and East Devon school sports partnerships. He runs curriculum sessions, after school clubs and competitions.
The rest of Pauls time is spent engaging adult groups in the sport of rowing. This is a new venture for 2012 and is progressing well. Currently Paul is working with groups in Plymouth, and is delivering a learn to row course with Plymouth University. Paul is always looking for more groups to work with in Devon.
