Plymouth SSP at the national junior indoor rowing championships
Report by Kevin Sellar
41 Students from eight schools = 17
medals
The journey to NJIRC National Junior Indoor Rowing
Championships started back in November 2013 with schools completing their level
one competitions followed by level two February 5th Plymouth Champs
then the level 3 regional 4th March held at Marjons University
Plymouth. From those results the PSSP rowing Coach Kevin Sellar selected the 41
students from eight of the partnership senior schools, to take to the NJIRC
event for the 7th year running.
Results this year had been high on the girl’s side more than
the boys. Both Boat race crews of eight had to be rebuilt from the departure of
the senior rowers from year 13 going to University. This year’s teams would
build the blocks for the next 2-3 years of competition.
Racing started with the Year 12 girls and Ivybridge CC
Phoebe Rheard put in a fantastic start and held onto a PB with 7.42.2 and
finishing 5th setting the mark.
Year seven girls up next saw Ellie Childs, PHSG, fight hard
to stay in the top ten and finish 9th out of 189. Lucy Chapman Plymstock, 14th,
Charlotte Moore DHSG 17th and Phoebe Lansley Ridgeway 41ST.
Stoke Damerel, pair of year 7’s Aiden McCarthy and Joseph Knight worked hard
for 15/20 respectably at their first major competition.
Year eight girls had the largest entry with 313. DHSG Lois
Fileman 8th, Charlotte Dooley 18th, Sneha Sursesh 24th, alongside Plymstock Esme Law 22nd,
and Rachel Griffin form Heles14th took
this in their stride and produced PB’s. Boys faired similar with Ben Diston 40th,
Corey Seldon 28th, Josh Hampson 22nd all three from
Ridgeway. Jack Adams year 9 DHSB had won a medal at BIRC, Plymouth Champs and
Marjons. Challenge on at NJIRC, Jack set a cracking pace and swopped the lead
regular with Rob Roy BC Oliver Cruickshank. The battle went to the line with
Jack taking silver –full house completed. Tom Hind 35th, Milo Harris
40 all DHSB and Heles, Tom Oakes 48th
all PB’s in a field of 181.
Louise Lecointe DHSG and Emily Taylor Plymstock raced side
by side and finished 9 metres apart in the year 9 event with 19th +
26th out of 190. DHSG supplied the year 10 girls with Daisy Thomas,
Phoebe Thomas and Lily Harris. Lily produced a PB and second place in her heat
to see the winning times disappear finishing 22nd, Daisy 50th
and Phoebe 57th/196. Year 10 boys rocked up with Travis Bramley and
Luke Riou form Ivybridge CC. Travis took silver last year and also medals at
Plymouth and Marjons. Hopes were high for another individual medal? Travis put
in a fantastic race plan and gave 110% to be piped in the last 10 seconds and
finish 5th. Luke Riou 20TH / 181.
The BOAT RACE OF 6.8KM had been changed to racing the 16min
19 seconds record time for the course. This was the PSSP strongest event. The two
new teams assembled and looked confident. The girl’s team never dropped out of
the top three places changing from first to third as changeovers switched the
scores. The boys challenged all the way and gave a sterling performance
finishing 5th the girls held a comfortable third to take the bronze
medal. Both teams did exceptionally well as they were up against year 12/13’s
and 90% of our crews are year 10 + 11.
The year 7 – 9 team relay was a four man crew each rowing
500metres. The PSSP had two teams in each male female race. Jack Adams led the
boys "A" crew with Tom Oakes, Milo Harris and Tom Hind, to a
comfortable silver medal. The girls not wanting to miss out on the podium led
by Louise Lecointe, Emily Taylor, Lois Fileman and Sneha Sursesh matched the
boys and also took silver. B teams fared well with the boys B 17th
and girls 12th.
A days rowing completed the PSSP team of 41 students
returned with 17 medals and a very proud bunch of students that have shown that
the schools in the South West are a force to be recognised. Coach Kevin Sellar
would like to thank the RAF Carers for supplying the sponsored T-shirts and a
big thank you to all parents for supporting the students through the training
period and the events over the last three months.

UCP Marjon West Region Schools Indoor Rowing Competition
Tuesday 4th
March saw 371 pupils from 36 schools and colleges descend on University St
Marks & St John in Plymouth for the regional indoor schools rowing
competition. This event also incorporated the Devon School Games level 3 event.
Results from each category were filtered to give overall placing’s, as well as
Devon only results.
Competitors
in years 7-11 rowed for a set time depending on their age group, while year 12
and 13 rowed for 2,000m. As well as a position, rowers are given a score,
worked out from a ‘gold medal target’ which gives them 100%. The standard of
the competition was very high, with 99% of winners scoring over their target
distance. An impressive score of the day came in the year 10 Male race with
Hugo Culverhouse, Wadebridge School scoring a massive 106.29% with silver 104%
Travis Bramley, Ivybridge CC and Luke Riou, Ivybridge CC bronze 100% s. More
impressive was the year 11 girls’ race. Rebecca Butchart, Plymstock school and
Plymouth ARC rower, was up against arch rival Alicia Parsons, a Devonport High
school girl and national swimmer not a rower!! Alicia used her swimmers lungs
and transferable fitness to set a new record with 1640m and 106.49% Rebecca
settled for silver with a 100.52% and a PB – SPORT IS TOUGH AT THE TOP. The
year 11 boys followed suit with Charlie White, of Bideford College scored a
massive 106.40% 1830m Charlie trains and
rows at Bideford AAC, North Devon – and is now on the World Class Start rowing
programme which no doubt will have contributed towards his impressive
performance.
Year 12 & 13 male winners |
Year 7s did
not let the older students take the glory, the boys race between Josh Thomas,
Redruth and Harry Sprague, Exmouth switched places for first and second throughout
the race and went to the final stroke with Josh 544m Harry 543m only one metre
separated them. That is just the arm action at the end of the stroke!!! Josh
took the top percentage of the day with 106.67% and Harry 106.47%. Maddy
Burley, Penryn set a new record with 1075meters in the four minutes for year
nine girls, Maddy set out from the start and left a 50metre gap all the way to
the finish scoring a 105.78%
Year 10 winners including Hugo Culverhouse in yellow |
20 machines
were linked up in banks of 10 projected to two screens. Results were displayed
on TV monitors, which kept supporters up to date with the results of each race.
The standard of indoor rowing in the region is improving each year, with
competitors from the West often bringing back medals from the national indoor
rowing championships. Indoor rowing clubs are extremely popular in schools in
the region, with some fantastic work going on in schools, in many cases ran by
volunteer coaches from local clubs, or 6th form pupils. Indoor
rowing is often where the less sporty pupils come into their own and such a
high level of participation is great to see.
Exmouth
Community College defended their title and came away with the team honours,
winning the overall school trophy, Boys trophy and the year 7 Project Oarsome
trophy. Devonport High School for Girls retained the overall girls’ trophy.

UCP Marjon West Region Schools Indoor Rowing Competition
On 4th March 2014 - UCP Marjon will play host to the regional schools indoor rowing competition which will again incorporate the Devon School Games. All entrants must score 85% or more of the 'Go Race Indoors' gold medal target to be able to compete (more details via the link above)
Wesport School Games
Friday 24th
January saw indoor rowing incorporated in to the ‘Wesport School Games’ for the
first time. 7 schools brought teams of 4, giving a total of 56 rowers to
compete at the games held at the University of the West of England.
Each
rower completed an individual challenge, ran under the ‘Go Race Indoors’
framework. This is 4 minutes for year 9s and 5 minutes for year 10 pupils. Each
challenge has a target distance – giving a percentage score. As a guide, the
top performers in each category would be scoring 100% or over. Wellsway school
came out on top of 3 of the 4 categories, with the most impressive performance
coming from Molly Churchman, scoring 107% of the gold medal target.
Each
school also completed a 2016m relay in their teams of four – this score was
added to the individual performances to give an overall winner. Wellsway school
took both the year 9 and year 10 team titles. The event was ran by British
Rowing staff, supported by leaders from newly established ‘Watersports Hub
School’ Ashton Park.

Cornish Open Indoor Rowing Competition
Top 3 ladies 2000m - Newquay RC |
The
Cornish Indoor Rowing Championships which took place on Saturday 18th
January, saw 65 athletes test themselves on Concept 2 machines. The event was
held again at Newquay Sports Centre and run by British Rowing staff and
volunteers. Machines borrowed from Newquay Tretherras and Treviglas schools as
well as Caradon Gig Club were used during the day which saw junior races, adult
2,000m challenges, 500m sprints and a team relay.
First
up were the junior races. There were year 7, 9, 10, 11 & year 12/13 races
which saw competitors compete using the ‘Go Race Indoors’ framework. The most
impressive junior performances were from Hettie Bawden and Tom Worden (Greenbank
Rowing Club). Hettie rowed 1346m in 5 minutes, giving 105% of British Rowings
gold medal target for Year 10 girls. Tom completed 2000m in 6 mins 35 seconds,
106% of the ‘gold medal target’. These results were especially impressive as
both had competed the previous day in the Cornish Schools competition – both
winning their categories two days in a row. Winners in each category were:
Phoebe Bawden – Hayle Gig Club (Year 7), Georgia O’conner – Bideford reds RC
(Year 9), Jack Adams (Year 9), Ryan Bailey – Caradon Gig Club (Year 10), Katie
Little – Plymouth (Year 11), Nick Dualabi-Wilson – Bideford Reds ARC (Year 11),
Phoebe Rhead – Ivybridge (Year 12/13).
Following
the junior races, the adults competed over 2,000m. The ladies event saw 10
competitors over 4 categories (lightweight, heavyweight, 40+ heavyweight &
40-49 lightweight). The fastest time of the day was from Newquay Rowing Clubs
Nicola Hazell with 7 minutes 24secs. Sarah Lewis from Greenbank Falmouth
finished close behind, winning the lightweight category with 7 mins 33 secs. Joanne
Culley from Mounts Bay gig club took the 40+ category with 7 mins 51 secs.
The
mens category saw some extremely close racing, Q-powers Ollie Osborne took the open
heavyweight prize with a time of 6 mins 14 secs. The 40-49 HW category saw the closest
racing of the day with Greenbank Falmouths James Kerr (6 mins 22.4), 0.6 second
quicker than Paul Brew of Q-power in second with 6mins 22. The mens 50-59 HW was
taken by Tony Atkinson (7.16.8) and the 50-59 year old lightweight category by Guy
Rolston (6 mins 59). Ray Lowrie took the adaptive ‘legs, trunk and arms’
category, completing 2000m in 6 min 47 secs. Ted Taylor from Newquay RC
retained his 65+ LW title in 7.23 and Tommy Gee (70+ HW) completed 2000m in 8
mins 20.
The 500m challenge saw a super fast time posted by Anna Lewis, 1
min 36 seconds. The mens equivalent was won by Morveth Ward in 1 min 19
seconds. The junior categories were won by Phoebe Rhead in 1 min 39 secs and
David Scoles in 1 min 34 secs.
The final event of the day saw 9 teams compete over 2000m in a
four person relay in four categories. Newquay RC took the ladies category,
Exmouth the mens, and Bideford ARC taking both junior male & junior mixed

Cornwall School Games Indoor Rowing Competition - 17th January
Cornwall School Games 2014 |
Friday 17th
January saw the Cornish Indoor Rowing Championships for Secondary Schools,
which was one of the first events to run as part of the 2014 Cornwall School
Games. This was the biggest event yet with 222 participants in school years
7-13 competed using the ‘Go Race Indoors’ framework. This is an increase of almost
40 participants from last years event. The event was run by British Rowing
staff & Cornwall Sports Partnership, with Newquay Tretherras School /
Newquay Sports Centre once again providing the venue.
The event saw a
category for year 12/13 pupils, with 15 rowers taking part from 6th
forms and colleges. The year 7-11 categories also saw some strong performances,
with 11 rowers scoring 100% or more of the British Rowing ‘Gold Medal Target’.
The year ten
competition saw particularly strong performances from Hettie Bawden (Penair)
and Hugo Culverhouse (Wadebridge) scoring 103% & 104% respectively.
The competition
saw entries from 22 secondary schools, with a large contingent from Liskeard
school, newcomers to Indoor Rowing Competition who have recently been working
in partnership with Looe Gig Club. Several more of these schools have strong
partnerships with local rowing clubs, offering water based sessions as well as
Indoor Rowing – linking to Sport Englands ‘Satellite Clubs’ programme run by
Kev Sellar.
A huge thanks to
the following who made this event possible: British Rowing staff for running
the day; Cornwall Sport Partnership; Newquay Sports Centre and Tretherras
School for the venue, equipment and sports leaders and Newquay Treviglas &
Caradon Gig Club for their machines.
The next Indoor
Competition in the West Region is the Plymouth City Championships on the 5th
February organised by coach Kevin Sellar. Following that is the UCP Marjon West
Regional Schools Competition on the 4th March, which this year will
incorporate the Devon School Games. It is also expected that several West
Regional schools will attend the National Championships in London (NJIRC) on
the 21st of March.
On June 25th,
Gig Rowing will feature once again as part of the Cornwall School Games watersports
event for the second year running. Schools are being encouraged to partner with
local community clubs and form teams to enter in four different categories. It
is hoped that forming these links will create a legacy from the games and allow
more young people to access sport through community clubs.
Pictures from the day will be uploaded to the 'Cornwall School Games' facebook page this week.

Monday 4th
March saw 398 pupils from 38 schools and colleges descend on UCP Marjon for the
regional indoor schools rowing competition. 2013 saw the second year that this
competition has incorporated the Devon School Games level 3 event. Results from
each category were filtered to give overall placing’s, as well as Devon only
results.
Competitors
in years 7-11 rowed for a set time depending on their age group, while year 12
and 13 rowed for 2,000m. As well as a position, rowers are given a score,
worked out from a ‘gold medal target’ which gives them 100%. The standard of
the competition was very high, with most winners scoring over their target
distance. The most impressive scores of the day came in the year 10 and year
12/13 Male races. Winning year 10 pupil Charlie White of Bideford College
scoring a massive 105% - 1502m in 5 minutes. Charlie trains and rows at
Bideford AAC, North Devon - which no doubt will have contributed towards his
impressive performance. In the year 12/13 race, Daniel Alberichi rowed 2000m in
a time of 6 minutes 35 seconds to give him 106% of the target time.
24 machines
were linked up to a big screen, which kept supporters up to date with the
results of each race. The standard of indoor rowing in the region is improving
each year, with competitors from the West often bringing back medals from the
national indoor rowing championships. Indoor rowing clubs are extremely popular
in schools in the region, with some fantastic work going on in schools, in many
cases ran by volunteer coaches from local clubs, or 6th form pupils.
Indoor rowing is often where the less sporty pupils come into their own, and
such a high level of participation is great to see.
Exmouth
Community College came away from the day with the majority of the team honours,
winning the overall boys and overall school trophies. Devonport High School for
Girls won the overall girls trophy and Plymstock school took the ‘Project
Oarsome’ most points for year 7. Unfortunately due to time constraints the
relay races were cancelled.
A big
thanks to UCP Marjon for their hospitality on the day, to the West region
British Rowing coaching team and the several volunteers who helped make the day
a success.
