CPGA
The Cornish Pilot Gig
Association is the governing body for the sport of gig rowing. Gig rowing has
been dubbed the ‘fastest growing sport in the South West’. The association was
formed in 1987 with just 6 clubs in Cornwall. There are now 60 clubs, the sport
spreading up the coast with clubs now in Dorset & Bristol. A gig is a 32 foot traditionally built wooden
boat rowed by 6 people and steered by a cox. The CPGAs main competitive season
runs May – September, with championship events in the Isles of Scilly and
Newquay opening and closing the season. The sport has developed quickly in the
past 20 years. Nowadays, to be at the top of the gig rowing fleet, crews train
up to 10 times a week, with land based training featuring very strongly in a
clubs annual programme. There is however still the opportunity to enjoy gig
rowing at a more leisurely pace. Many clubs operate recreational sections where
rowers can row socially without the pressures of training.
